SOLIS (2023)
In my final year of studies, I decided to delve into ‘Bright Light Therapy’ which are those who struggle with ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’. Solis (Sol-ees) is a Bright Light Therapy device taken into the form of a wall light. The design takes inspiration from the movement of the sun, as bright light therapy devices are meant to replicate the sun’s light intensity in a users home.
Bright Light Therapy (BLT) is a holistic method for those struggling with ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)’. This occurs during the winter seasons where depressive symptoms rise, effects on circadian rhythm, and lack of sunlight. About 5% of the world’s population experience this disorder. This is a condition that can last 40% of the year.
How a Bright Light Therapy lamp works; the user has the device arm’s length away and exposes themselves to a light that produces 10,000lux for at least 30 minutes for a few days to gain full effectiveness to reduce symptoms.
Applying this device into the form of a wall light creates purpose and a place for the device to return to. Solis is a bright light therapy device that provides easy accessibility and now becomes an object the user wants to show in their home, rather than store away.
